The New Look brand grew from a single fashion store in 1969 in the UK to become a leading fast-fashion brand. Today, it boasts hundreds of stores in the UK, with more in Europe and Asia. The key to growth has been reacting quickly to the latest fashion trends and getting wearable styles in the hands of customers quickly. That’s why the company looked to Peak-Ryzex to replace its outdated paper-based system in order to improve critical stock management and price management processes.

New Look operated an outdated paper-based system for all in-store activities – including the critical stock management and price management processes. A strategic decision was made to increase the profitability and efficiency of store operations and, in particular, provide improved price management. Peak-Ryzex was brought in by the retailer to determine both the software solution and hardware architecture that could simplify and manage many aspects of in-store activity.

Solution

Three key aspects of a retail in-store solution were covered by Peak-Ryzex: mobile computers for staff, wireless network architecture for stores, and back-end data capture for the enterprise. Staff were equipped with MC3000 mobile computers from Zebra Technologies. Operating on a wireless infrastructure, data is seamlessly transferred in real-time between the store-based mobile computers and a clustered server environment at New Look’s headquarters in Weymouth, UK, to maximize network control and security.

A Cisco®-based wireless network for all stores is connected to a centralized network architecture that enables maximum network control and security while minimizing capital outlay at the store level. New Look chose the Peak-Ryzex retail software suite for many in-store operations. Peak-Ryzex’s retail software offers a modular approach with functions that can be “switched on” and made seamlessly accessible to selected mobile computers at the flick of a button. The software’s flexible and modular approach covers all in-store functions of stock management, price management, customer service, and management information combined with voice over IP capability and mobile printing. Support is provided via ServiceTrak, the company’s state-of-the-art web portal for managing enterprise assets and placing service calls. Service level agreement and exception reports are generated by the system and emailed to key users to provide constant awareness of the health and performance of the enterprise.

Results

Implementation of the end-to-end solution was achieved in 17 weeks and completed on time with 100 percent installation success. The project's success was measured in two key areas:

  • Stock management
  • Price look-up and markdown

The efficiency gains were considerable, especially in stock management. Instead of a tedious and time-consuming search for items – most of which are off the retail floor – the staff can now simply scan an item and instantly see the stock availability by size and color.

The new price look-up and markdown solution provides instant answers to customers’ price check and availability requests. That frees significant staff time for other customer services and personal assistance, thereby improving the shopping experience. The price markdown function has transformed how promotional activities are carried out. The simplicity of scanning an item and seeing real-time price modifications empowers shop floor staff to effectively manage what was a complex, paper-based process.
