The implementation of a second-generation WLAN data collection system is saving YORK – an international HVACR manufacturer – time by providing real-time visibility of materials on-hand and tracking material locations. Peak-Ryzex provided transaction development, system installation, training and support while defining SAP configuration.

As one of the nation's largest suppliers of heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) equipment, YORK needed a complete solution when upgrading its WLAN data collection system to meet SAP compatibility. The system needed to be viable across three large manufacturing sites.
When HVACR units are completed, they are received into purchased good inventory and the components are automatically back-flushed out of bins based on the bill of materials. When the bin reaches the minimum stocking level, SAP automatically generates a replenishment transfer order that immediately appears on the user's mobile computer. Peak-Ryzex helped YORK implement a system that eliminated waiting – sometimes up to three days – for the replacement information to be entered in the system.
Peak-Ryzex mapped the complete job, including WLAN site surveys, WLAN infrastructure design, hardware installation, training, support and SAP integration at three global facilities. Encountering a unique obstacle, they were able to overcome varying individual part numbering in each site by building a custom table in SAP to cross-reference new part numbers with old numbers at each plant. Users can also query the database to obtain the old numbers based on the new number, or vice versa. An instant messaging solution was also implemented to allow for immediate communication between supervisors and operators right on the mobile computers.

Because every transaction now updates the SAP database in real time, YORK is provided with immediate verification and visibility. The completeness of the wireless transactions enables the company to operate almost entirely without paper for substantial time savings and cost reductions. Real-time bin location increases operator accuracy and efficiency. Ultimately, the new systems enable material to move more quickly though the plants, avoiding production downtime while increasing productivity and reducing inventory. The ability of the new system to store the location of material speeds the replenishment operation.
